Joining Hands to Fight the Pandemic

In an effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Lee Ka Kit, Peter and Dr Lee Ka Shing, Martin, the Group’s Chairmen, established the privately-financed Henderson Development Anti-Epidemic Fund (“the Fund”) back in January 2020. The Fund has since launched a series of relief measures and initiatives in Hong Kong and mainland China to support the community and fight the virus. As of March 2022, the Fund has contributed around HK$150 million worth of anti-epidemic supplies and monetary support.

In March 2022, to help curb the city’s fifth wave of COVID-19 infections and to facilitate the Government’s anti-epidemic work, the Group offered the Government four separate land plots occupying a combined total of 1.25 million sq. ft. for the purpose of providing community isolation facilities and building temporary cargo transfer yards. In addition, the Fund distributed anti-epidemic supplies to low-income families, elderly homes and frontline healthcare workers, among others, in partnership with various local NGOs.

To incentivise the public to get vaccinated as soon as possible, the Fund sponsored the “Early Vaccination Incentive Scheme”, which was launched in June 2021. A series of six lucky draws had taken place since, offering over HK$6.3 million worth of prizes, including 300 taels of 9999 gold and 1,200 sets of spending vouchers worth HK$1,000 per set. More than 2.1 million people successfully registered for the Scheme.

In 2020, the Fund contributed to a number of relief initiatives, such as sponsoring the sterilisation of local public transportation fleets with the use of long-acting nano photocatalytic sanitising spray and donating laptop computers and data packages to financially disadvantaged students.

Our Occupational Health and Safety

The Safety and Environmental Sub-committee and the Site Safety Sub-committee are responsible for managing the Group’s health and safety matters. In 2021, comparing the Hong Kong industry’s data to our past accident rate, the former is 29.5 while ours is 5.3, demonstrating our good on-site monitoring. At construction sites, the Site Safety Sub-committee conducts weekly inspections to ensure that any identified safety issues are addressed promptly. Safety officers at each site also closely monitor safety-related issues and take effective corrective actions promptly whenever necessary. We carry out independent safety audits every six months to evaluate our safety effectiveness. Site workers are encouraged to report risks through a variety of channels including notifying the safety officer, attending committee meetings and using suggestion boxes.
